Montenegro borders on Albania to the southeast, the Adriatic Sea to the south, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina to the west, and Serbia to the north.

Roughly equal in circumference to Cyprus or Connecticut, Montenengro, with such a concertina of mountains, is, in terms of surface area, far bigger than either. At 13.812 km , through, it's a small country. The length of the coastline is 293 km, of which 73 km are beach. The length of the border is 614 km. The highest mountain, Bobotov Kuk (Mount Durmitor), is 2.522 meter although some claims that peaks in the Prokletije, on the border with Albania are higher.

The Slav tribes, mixed with Illyrians, Avars and Romans, formed the semi-independent dukedom of Duklja by the 10th century. In 1077, Pope Gregory VII recognized Duklja as an independent state, acknowledging its King Mihailo (Michael) (of the Vojislavljević dynasty founded by nobleman Stefan Vojislav) as rex Docleae (King of Duklja). The kingdom, however, paid tribute to the Byzantine Empire; later to the Bulgarian Empire; it gave birth to the later medieval kingdom of the Serbian Grand Prince (Serbian: 'župan') Stefan Nemanja, who originated from Duklja.
